2006 Sojourners/Call to Renewal Conference Excerpt

Tue, 10 Jun 2008 at 01:50 AM

"Secularists are wrong when they ask believers to leave their religion at the door before entering into the public square. Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, William Jennings Bryan, Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King – indeed, the majority of great reformers in American history – were not only motivated by faith but repeatedly used religious language to argue for their cause. To say that men and women should not inject their 'personal morality' into public policy debates is a practical absurdity. Our law is by definition a codification of morality, much of it grounded in the Judeo-Christian tradition." -Barak Obama

Yeah.... I find that statement a bit flammable.  I mean, I can understand why it was said, based on who it appeals to but there are two sides to this and a fine balance.  On one hand, yes... laws, in general, are a reflection of the public's views on morality.  Many of these views are formed by religious belief... so it is almost impossible to leave one's faith behind when attempting to create laws and policies.

THAT BEING SAID... most of our our founding fathers took a rather 'deist' approach in that they explicitly tried to leave religion out of the constitution as the driving force.  They tried to not mention God in the same breath as government.  This was done intentionally in the hopes of making the country more accessible and durable over the course of time.  Even the pledge of allegiance didn't have the word God in it until 1954.

What O'bama said carries a powerful ability to be misinterpreted.  It's one thing to have your father influence your perspective... It's an entirely different thing to have your faith derail your objectivity, cloud your judgment and cause you to reject any and all varying perspectives.  However, I can see why it was said and who it was meant to appeal to without trying to necessarily offend anyone else.  I don't care that it was said so much as I find it disappointing that it wasn't said with a caveat of restraint.
